Evolution Of Construction

Admin | October 16 2021

Human beings emerged around 3 lakhs years ago in the continent of Africa. Slowly they started migrating out of Africa. For more than 285,000 years they remained as nomadic, hunter- gatherers. They started agriculture 1 0,000 years ago and this resulted in permanent human settlement.

They got the idea of housing from their forefathers who lived in natural caves.  The idea of masonry originated when man developed artificial caves by stacking stones. Pyramid constructed by Egyptians can be considered as initial masonry structures. People started using lime stones, sand stones, granite and basalt for making their houses. This was followed by dried and burnt clay bricks. Before the invention of cement, stone masonry walls were also widely used. Romans invented cement and started using concrete for construction. Combination of concrete and wood increased flexibility of construction. People started using lime stone mortar and cement mortar for joints and for plastering purpose. Different types of rocks, tiles, granites, sand stone, lime stone and marbles were widely used for the construction of walls. Clay bricks and tiles were used and they started covering the clay bricks with cement, lime stone plasters. In India, clay bricks are used right from the time of Indus valley civilization. This gave better aesthetics, temperature control, sound control and fire resistance.

Solid / Hollow concrete blocks were experimented for masonry applications after the year 1890. This came into the application after the year 1900. Concrete blocks were used as a substitute for stone or wood in the building of houses. The size of first concrete block was 30x10x8. Those days one person used to produce 10 bricks per hour since this was casted manually by hand. Hand process was replaced by egg laying type mobile machines and automated stationary machines. Block sizes were modified to 16x8x8, 16x6x8, 16x4x8. Automatic machines and manufacturing process can produce upto 3500 to 7000 blocks per hour nowadays. Gradually hand casting was replaced by vibro compactory machines

In automated plants, raw materials are filled automatically into the  mould cavity, vibrated and then compacted to the required density and dimensions on production pallets. Automatic batching and mixing plants will supply semi dry concrete mix of correct proportion. After the blocks are casted they are cured for achieving initial strength under controlled humidity conditions during  the initial 24 hours. After 24 hours they are stacked for 10-15 days and then dispatched. High strength, homogeneous cross section, dimensional accuracy, low water absorption, superior finish and minimum wastage are the characteristics of concrete blocks made out of an automated good quality concrete block machine .
